cocount trees abound the coastal regions of bangladesh there are many stories of how the coconuts came to those areas but this is perhaps the one that most children like best in a village near the coast the people spent their day fishing and growing vegetables but there was oneold man who never made a garden he spent all his day fishing and after sunset he exchanged his fish for cooked vegetables and curry he did this everyday until the people began to complain so one day the village headman summoned a meeting of the villagers and said why does this old man not makehisown garden we all catch fish and there is on need for us to exchange his fish for our vegetables he must grow his onw garden otherwise no one is going to givehim any cooked vening food that evening the old fisherman tired and hungry roamed from door to door trying to exchange his fish for food but everyone refused then he came home sad and determined to cook his own food he split a bamboo cane and lit it using it as a torch he dug out some yams then he began to dig a hole in the ground to make a hearth the old man got so involved with digging that he failed to notice that the fire from the torch spread up to his shirt and within minutes his clothes were engulfed in bright flames
the next morning the villagers found his dead body they covered it with earth and turned it into a grave after several months when the monsoon came the people of that village noticed an extra ordinary plant growing out of the old man's grave slowly it began to grow up extending its long leaves and the stem grew stronger and longer then the tree bore some round green fruits and when the winter months came the fruits dried and fell on the ground lt had a hard shell and so the people had to crack it they noticed that the nut like fruit had two spots inside which resembled the old man's eyes and the long fibers outside the shell looked like his hair and bearh from the coconut. they had milk to drink and the nutty flesh to eat as a delicious dish the green leaves gave them shade from the tropical heat and they could also be plaited into mast to lie on
after that the people trated it as a sacred fruit and although the old man had never grown a crop in his life, after death, he bore the best fruit, thus coconuts became the popular fruit in that part of the world.
