the story of the tiger who fancied himself as the lucky bridegroom
once upon a time there lived a man in a village of Bengal whose patience was sorely tried by a clever fox the fox made frequent raids on the man,s home and carried away a number of his hens at last the man man hit upon a plan he carefully laid a trap close by the jungle near his home every day he went there to find out if fox had fallen in the trap or not one day the fox was truly trapped now a wedding was to take place in the villager's home on that day. Everybody was busy with preparations for the coming wedding and no one came near the trap during the whole day. Thus the day went by and dusk fell.
Everyone made merry at the villager's home on the occasion of the wedding. There were fireworks and illumination. Friends and guests as well as the members of the family were engrossed in the festivities. Just then a tiger softly peeped out of the jungle and saw the trapped fox. The tiger looked at him for a moment and then said, "Hello, Pundit, why are you in such a state as this?'' The fox promptly answered, "You know, these people are so insistent! I said 'no' to them a hundred times if once, but they are indeed a persuasive lot. At last I had to agree to marry the beautiful daughter of that home, but you know, I really don't want to marry yet.''
The tiger saw that here was a golden opportunity which only a fool woulds let slip by. He said eagerly,''Well, Pundit, I have been thinking of marrying for quite some time. I would marry today if I found a nice girl.
The fox realised that the tiger was dazed by the thoughts of the beautiful maid. He knew he could make a fool of him with little trouble. So he leaned forward a little and said to the tiger, ''If that's the way you fell I really don't mind letting you be the bridegroom'' That will suit me fine, too. I can then go and get busy with my studies.''
now whether it was due to his regard of the fox's love of scholarship or his own keen desire to marry ,the tiger could hardly a moment.he wanted to know from the fox how he could get inside the trap
the fox asked the tiger to open the door of the trap which was fastened from outside the tiger unfastened the latch when the fox stepped out and the tiger went in the fox then shut the door of the trap securely
the people after a while came to know that a tiger was trapped the outskirt of the jungle they came running with sticks and spears and shovels when the tiger saw the crowd approaching he asked the fox who was still waiting near by pundit what is the matter?why are those men rushing this way
the fox said .they are coming to give the bridegroom the ceremonial bath you have nothing to worry you know
reassured the tiger waited patiently for the men to come and give him the bridegroom.s bath the men came and stood all around the trap one of the men poked at the tiger with a pole the tiger thought that it was perhaps his brother:in law joking with him
then another man thrust a spear at him his skin broke where he was hit and a little blood poured out of the wound. The tiger thought that the in-laws were going too far with their horse-play. There ought to be a limit to such rough housing.
In a moment there fell another mighty blow on the tiger from a different corner. The tiger shouted in pain and cried angrily, ''If you carry on like this, I warn you, I'll go away and never marry your girl.''
The sly fox said to himself at this stage that it was not a good spot for him to linger at anymore. So, leaving the tiger in God's hands he linked off quietly.

the legend of the coconut
cocount trees abound the coastal regions of bangladesh there are many stories of how the coconuts came to those areas but this is perhaps the one that most children like best in a village near the coast the people spent their day fishing and growing vegetables but there was oneold man who never made a garden he spent all his day fishing and after sunset he exchanged his fish for cooked vegetables and curry he did this everyday until the people began to complain so one day the village headman summoned a meeting of the villagers and said why does this old man not makehisown garden we all catch fish and there is on need for us to exchange his fish for our vegetables he must grow his onw garden otherwise no one is going to givehim any cooked vening food that evening the old fisherman tired and hungry roamed from door to door trying to exchange his fish for food but everyone refused then he came home sad and determined to cook his own food he split a bamboo cane and lit it using it as a torch he dug out some yams then he began to dig a hole in the ground to make a hearth the old man got so involved with digging that he failed to notice that the fire from the torch spread up to his shirt and within minutes his clothes were engulfed in bright flames
the next morning the villagers found his dead body they covered it with earth and turned it into a grave after several months when the monsoon came the people of that village noticed an extra ordinary plant growing out of the old man's grave slowly it began to grow up extending its long leaves and the stem grew stronger and longer then the tree bore some round green fruits and when the winter months came the fruits dried and fell on the ground lt had a hard shell and so the people had to crack it they noticed that the nut like fruit had two spots inside which resembled the old man's eyes and the long fibers outside the shell looked like his hair and bearh from the coconut. they had milk to drink and the nutty flesh to eat as a delicious dish the green leaves gave them shade from the tropical heat and they could also be plaited into mast to lie on
after that the people trated it as a sacred fruit and although the old man had never grown a crop in his life, after death, he bore the best fruit, thus coconuts became the popular fruit in that part of the world.
